Drove it around a little, and honestly I didn't feel the situation had improved much, if at all. I decided to change them anyway (even though it's going for an inspection II on Monday). So I whipped the plugs out.they all looked good.

sensor today (the one on the hose going into the rad as opposed to the one in the block which I believe is the coolant.) and the code then did not reappear.result!! So I changed the RADIATOR (not coolant) temp. Thanks for those guys.I'll definitely try the test mode tomorrow. Let me know what it does, if you're brave enough to try it. Corrects itself when the engine is on.ġ9) Locking & unlocking of the test modes.Ģ1) Don't know. I sometimes get a bogus -48 degrees C when the engine is not running. Looks like a real-time readout of some registers.ġ6) Oil temperature. Could be some diagnostic codes.ġ5) DOn't know. Goes through the various gong sounds.ġ4) Don't know. Could be average speed used to calculate arrival time for distance to destination set in OBC?ġ3) Sound test.

Ever wanted to see the speedo show 190 without having to leave the garage?Ĥ) Current fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers and in liters per hour.ĥ) Average fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers and range.Ħ) Current fuel levels in left tank, right tank, and total.ħ) Engine temperature (not sure where measured), engine RPM, and outside temperature.ġ2) Not sure what these are. Here is what I know about the various test modes:Ģ) Instrument test: Cute light show in the instrument panel. Press and hold the right button to exit test mode (turning the key to 0 works as well). Press the left button to enter a test and cycle between modes within a test. Use the right button to step from test to test. Follow steps 1) to 3) of the "UNLOCK PROCEDURE" to enter test mode. NAVIGATING BETWEEN TESTS AND PERFORMING THEM: Repeatedly press left button until "LOCK : xx" appears, where "xx" is your unlock code.ĩ. the unlock code for "AB12345" would be 15 (1+2+3+4+5).Ħ) Repeatedly press the right button until "TEST-NR. 01" comes up (5 to 10 seconds).Ĥ) Press the left button on the instrument panel, and the vehicle id comes up (last 7 digits of VIN).ĥ) Add up the last 5 digits to get the "unlock code", e.g. Once you unlock them, they remain unlocked, until you bring in your car for service, or explicitly lock them yourself.ġ) Key to ignition pos 2 (no need to start engine).Ģ) Fasten the seat belt to get rid of the "Fasten Seat Belt" message.ģ) Press the right button on the instrument panel, and hold it until "TEST-NR.

I didn't run into any trouble, but as always, do this at your own risk BMW apparently doesn't want you to play with this, so most modes are locked.

If you get completely way out readings then the sensor is probably the place to start looking.Īs promised, here are the instructions on how to get to the "Test Modes" of the OBC. This tells you how to access the menu, don't worry it works on all E39's, the test you want is #7, this gives you the coolant temperature, when the engine is warmed up this should read somewhere in the region of 78-79 degrees (figures for an M5 but a 530 should be somewhere near this i would think) take the car for a run cruising at 60-70 on a light throttle the temp should stay within a degree or so, if it drops significantly then your thermostat is probably sticking open. I would want to have a bit more of an idea before taking it too the dealer, is there a good indy near you as their rates will be a lot lower and you could end up paying for a lot of labour to diagnose the root cause.
